After downloading the Windows XP ISO file from the bottom of the article to your computer, select the ISO file in this step and click the Open button. Step 11 Click the Start button to start the virtual computer and start the setup. Oct 15, 2014 For Windows 7 users, installing the XP Mode is easy: download XP mode, run the installer, done. Since Wiindows 8 or 10 does not support XP Mode, we'll need to extract the virtual hard drive included in XP Mode and run it as a virtual machine.
One of the great things about Windows 7 is 'Windows XP Mode' which is basically that you get a copy of Windows XP that runs under Windows Virtual PC. It can run 'seamlessly' which means you can run XP apps within the VM under Windows 7 with complete compatibility and it looks like the apps are running under Windows 7 itself. They are in the Start Menu and you don't have a 'VM Window' like you usually see.
Open the Icon in IconWorkshop. If files with the.icns extension are properly recognized by Windows XP, you can simply double-click to open them in IconWorkshop. If not, launch the IconWorkshop program and select Open from the File menu. Locate and open the Fat-Roll.icns file. Save the Icon as a Windows. XP Mode was introduced for Windows 7 (Professional, Enterprise, or Ultimate) users as a way to run software designed for XP in Windows 7. Since Wiindows 8 or 10 does not support XP Mode, we'll need to extract the virtual hard drive included in XP Mode and run it as a virtual machine. Jan 25, 2010 Click the Start Menu and use the path Start All Programs Windows Virtual PC Windows XP Mode. Type a password into the pop up box to use for your virtual machine, type again to verify, and click next. On the second screen, select the option to turn automatic updates on, and click next. Windows Virtual PC will now set up your XP Mode machine.
However, in order to save disk space and allow folks to have a base image and multiple XP images, the default disk setting for XP Mode is 'differencing.' That means that there's a base Windows XP Mode 'base' VHD file in 'C:Program FilesWindows XP ModeWindows XP Mode base.vhd.' This file is the base that your instance of Windows XP is, ahem, based on.
If you want to move your Windows XP Mode Virtual Machine to another box, as I did tonight, you might get an error like:
..one of the parent hard disks is missing..
This means that the VM you moved can't find the base disk.
So the question is, how can you make your Windows XP Mode VHD more portable?
First, shut down your VM. Don't hibernate it, actually shut it down. They really want you to hibernate. To shut down, launch the main virtual machine and click the Ctrl+Alt+Del top level menu item, then select Shut Down.
Next, go to the Virtual Machines folder. I do this by typing 'virtual' in the search box at the Start Menu. Confirm you are really powered down.
Next, right click your VM and select Settings, then click the Hard Disk 1 option on the left.
See how it has a Virtual hard disk file then a Parent Disk? Now click Modify.
From this dialog, click Merge. We are going to Merge the two disks into one disk so we can move it to another machine.
You can choose to do this in place, or make a new file somewhere, which is what I did.
Note that if you change the name of your VHD file, you may need to hook it up again in your VMC file (your Virtual Machine settings) when you move your disk to the other machine. Alternatively, you can open up the .vmc file in notepad and carefully change the name of the VHD it thinks it's pointing two in two places.
Xp Mode For Windows 10Last note, you'll likely be prompted for a Name and Password to log into your Windows XP VM on your new machine. You'll need to remember your password, but chances are your username is XPMUser. That's tricky.
Hope this helps. Video call for facebook on mac.

Despite its age, Windows XP is useful to have in your IT lab, for instance if you need to experiment with older software or study malware. Microsoft distributes a Windows XP virtual machine called Windows XP Mode, which you can download if you’re running Windows 7, as I explained earlier.
If you’re using Windows 8 or 8.1, you can still get the Windows XP virtual machine, but it requires a bit more work. The initial steps below are based on the instructions documented on the Redmond Pie blog.
First, download Windows XP Mode from Microsoft. You’ll need to go through the validation wizard to confirm you’re running a licensed copy of Windows. Though designed to look for Windows 7, it appears to accept Windows 8.1 as well. After the validation completes, you’ll able to download the Windows XP Mode installation file.
Once you’ve downloaded the Windows XP Mode installation file, don’t run it. Instead, explore its contents using a decompressing utility such as WinRAR or 7-Zip. Inside that file, go into the “sources” directory and extract the file called “xpm”.
The file “xpm” is another compressed archive, whose contents you can navigate using a tool such as 7-Zip. Extract from the “xpm” archive the file called “VirtualXPVHD” and rename it to something like “VirtualXP.vhd”.
This VHD file represents the virtual hard disk of the Windows XP system. You can use VirtualBox to create a virtual machine out of it. To do this, use the VirtualBox wizard for creating a new virtual machine and select “Use an existing virtual hard drive file” when prompted.
Windows Xp Mode SetupTo create a VMware virtual machine out of the VHD file you’ll first need to convert it to the VMDK format, which VMware uses to represent virtual disks. The most convenient way to do this might be to use WinImage. If following this approach, select “Convert Virtual Hard Disk image…” from the Disk menu in WinImage, then select “Create Dynamically Expanding Virtual Hard Disk”. When prompted to save the file, select the VMware VMDK format and name the output file something like “VirtualXP.vmdk”.
Once the VMDK file has been saved, you can create a VMware virtual machine out of it by using VMware Workstation. Go to File > New Virtual Machine. Select “Custom (advanced)” when prompted for the configuration type. Accept defaults as you navigate through the wizard. When prompted to select a disk, select “Use an existing virtual disk” and point the tool to the VirtualXP.vmdk file.
Windows Xp Mode PerformanceOnce the VMware virtual machine has been created, launch it, then go through the Windows XP setup wizard within the new virtual machine the same way you would do it for a regular Windows XP system. After Windows XP setup is done, install VMware tools into the Windows XP virtual machine you just created. Take a snapshot of your virtual machine, in case it breaks.
Extract Windows Xp Mode For Mac FreeWindows XP installed into the virtual machine in that manner might need to be activated with Microsoft within 30 days of the installation. Be sure to understand and comply with the applicable software licensing agreements.
